Heat exchange and preheater for the 700-atm liquid-phase chamber, Hydrierwerk Blechhammer (in German)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6496867
Advantages and disadvantages of several possible patterns for heat exchange to be used at Blechhammer and their effects on preheating of coal paste are discussed. The report was apparently based on experimental work done at Ludwigshafen. The various possibilities were appropriate for a 700-atm liquid-phase chamber operating on coal paste. If only gasoline were to be produced, the alternatives considered included the use or non-use of heat exchange for heating part or all the coal paste, the drawing off of sludge residue at different temperatures in the process, and the addition or non-addition of various-temperature residues to the coal paste during its passage through the heat-exchange process. If gasoline and fuel oil were to be produced, the alternatives considered varied only in how many ovens were in the chamber and in the temperatures of the residues added to the coal paste in the heat exchange, since heat exchange was used for all of the coal paste. Each of the alternatives was illustrated with data entries in a table and with a graph showing temperature changes for the products being heated and cooled through all stages of the preheating. The article also contained some discussion of the conditions for the experiments, the type of heat exchangers used, the heat-transfer coefficients for the heat exchangers and preheaters, and the pressure drop in the system. The article also lists some questions that still remained to be answered before a final decision should be made. 9 diagrams, 1 table
