Two days of hearings evaluated current safeguards, both international (detection of attempts to divert nuclear materials) and domestic (control, accounting, and physical protection against theft of nuclear materials). Witnesses from DOE, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency, and the Department of State testified on the current status of safeguards and non-proliferation policies. Reviewing research and development programs at a variety of federal agencies and laboratories were representatives from several national laboratories and the private sector.
