The nonlinear optical response of Li[sub 1-x](Nb,Ta)[sub 1-x]W[sub x]O[sub 3] increases strongly with x. This is explained in terms of changing bond polarizabilities: W-O bonds are more polarizable than Nb-O/Ta-O bonds. A W-O bond polarizability [beta][parallel] of (570 [+-] 130) 10[sup [minus]40] m[sup 4]/V is derived, neglecting B[perpendicular]. The luminescence properties depend also on x, and new emission and excitation bands are found. 21 refs., 5 figs.
