The luminescence properties of Ba[sub 3.96]Eu[sub 0.04]OCl[sub 6], Ba[sub 3.96]Eu[sub 0.04]OBr[sub 6], Sr[sub 3.96]Eu[sub 0.04]OCl[sub 6], Sr[sub 3.96]Eu[sub 0.04]OBr[sub 6], Ca[sub 3.96]Eu[sub 0.04]OCl[sub 6], Eu[sub 4]OCl[sub 6], and Eu[sub 4]OBr[sub 6] are reported and discussed. All compositions show an efficient blue emission under UV and X-ray excitation. From the similarity of the luminescence properties of these materials, it si concluded that the luminescence properties of Eu[sup 2+] are strongly determined by the oxide ion in the crystal structure. In Eu[sub 4]OCl[sub 6] and Eu[sub 4]OB[sub 6] no concentration quenching of the luminescence is observed. The luminescence properties of the alkaline-earth oxyhalides doped with lead are also reported. The Pb[sup 2+] ion exhibits a blue emission in the strontium oxyhalides. In addition a red emission of unknown nature is observed. 25 refs., 5 figs., 2 tabs.
