Luminescence properties of Eu/sup 3+/ and Tb/sup 3+/ in Ln/sub 3/O/sub 4/X oxyhalides (Ln-X:Y-Cl, Y-Br, Gd-Br)

The luminescence properties of Eu/sup 3+/ and Tb/sup 3+/ in Y/sub 3/O/sub 4/Cl, Y/sub 3/O/sub 4/Br, and Gd/sub 3/O/sub 4/Br, a family of oxyhalides with high chemical stability, have been investigated. The emission results from rare earth ions lying in two different sites. Spectral distributions and efficiencies are compared to those of the related Eu/sup 3+/ or Tb/sup 3+/ doped LnOX compounds. The efficiency of the same order of magnitude for UV excitation into the Eu/sup 3+/ charge transfer or Tb/sup 3-/ 5d bands, but much lower for excitation through the host lattice (i.e., by x-ray or electron beam).
