Separation techniques: sulfur recovery from low hydrogen sulfide gases

Processes are described for recovering sulfur from acid gases containing less H/sub 2/S than can be processed satisfactorily in a typical Claus sulfur recovery unit. A previous work discussed several problems related to unusual conditions encountered in the design and operation of the modified Claus sulfur process for the conversion and recovery of elemental sulfur from gases containing H/sub 2/S. Many of these unusual conditions are related to contaminants in the acid gas feed such as ammonia, hydrocarbons and excessive water vapor, and to a low concentration of H/sub 2/S in the acid gas feed. Numerous conditions have created interest in low H/sub 2/S feed, including the many synthetic fuel projects that include processing of shale oil, coal conversion products, heavy oils, and tar sands. The need for efficient sulfur recovery is further spurred by higher energy costs, stricter environmental controls, and the need to process oils with ever-increasing sulfur content. One feature of the Recycle Selectox Process is that the circulating gas acts like a flywheel to maintain steady operating conditions, even when the acid gas feed fluctuates.
