Alpha decay of giant electric quadrupole resonances

Integrated formulas for ..cap alpha.. widths and shell spectroscopic factors of ..cap alpha.. particles have been used to calculate absolute probabilities of direct ..cap alpha.. decay of giant quadrupole resonances in /sup 16/O and /sup 40/Ca. The importance of taking into account interference of diagonal and nondiagonal ..cap alpha..-decay mechanisms is demonstrated for /sup 16/O. It is shown that the inclusion, in addition, of the statistical mechanism permits description of the experimental probabilities of ..cap alpha.. decay of the giant quadrupole resonance. It is concluded that the contributions of the direct and statistical mechanisms are commensurate in all cases investigated. Partial yields of various modes of ..cap alpha.. decay of giant quadrupole resonances and integrated ..cap alpha..-particle spectra have been calculated. The results agree with the experimental data. Estimates are given for the probabilities of direct ..cap alpha.. decay of E2 resonances in the nuclei /sup 53//sup --//sup 62/Ni.
