The principal administration witnesses defending the 1983 budget proposal at the three-day hearing were Secretary of the Interior James Watt, Chairman of the US Synthetic Fuels Corporation Board Edwards Noble, Chief of the US Forest Service Max Peterson, and Secretary of Energy James Edwards. The committee focused on how well each of the programs under review meets the criteria of balanced economic growth and stewardship of natural resources, and whether the funding levels in each department are appropriate to the task.
