Budget hearings for the 1982 proposals and for changes in the 1981 natural resources programs were held on February 24 and March 13, 1981. The hearings focused on ways to produce and use natural resources, especially strategic minerals, to reduce US dependence and vulnerability. At issue is the use and allocation of public lands for resource development. Proper budget decisions will determine the direction of land management. The testimony of six witnesses, including Secretary of the Interior James Watt, spokesmen from the Department of Agriculture, and Senators from affected states, is followed by responses from the Departments to additional questions from the committee.
