The Roanoke, Va., advanced wastewater treatment plant is designed for an average annual day flow of 35 mgd with peak hydraulic capacity of 60 mgd. Processes include: primary, activated sludge, nitrification using suspended growth reactors; and chemical-physical treatment with flocculation, coagulation, and dual media filtration. Phosphorus is removed with chemical precipitation. All effluent is chlorinated. Unique features of the sewage plant are described. Heating requirements for buildings come from a raw sewage pump and blower engines. (1 diagram, 2 photos, 2 tables)
