People movers: from semi-public to public transit

The expansion of people movers from recreational settings to urban environments, where they operate as a form of mass transit, differ from conventional mass trnsit in their operating and economic characteristics. A review of existing people movers and several systems under construction or in the planning stage describes their application and scale. Facility configuration and downtown circulation patterns can be more economical when horizontal spce is integrated by people movers that resemble medium-scale rail service for 75 to 100 passengers. 4 references, 5 figures, 3 tables.
