Federal support for people-mover systems (scale-oriented or service-oriented vehicles that run on guideways) has helped to develop 21 operating systems. The government stresses automation and spans both scale- and service-orientation definitions. The benefit to American cities in greater productivity, energy savings, and in reduced congestion and environmental impacts are well documented in several studies. The designs of existing systems are compared in cost and effectiveness. A system developed at Duke University is described in detail. 9 references, 8 figures. (DCK)
