This patent describes a transmission for an automobile. The method comprises having a main shaft aligned axially with and arranged to be driven by a main drive shaft which is in turn arranged to be driven by an automobile engine. A counter shaft is arranged in parallel with the main shaft. The improvement comprises: the main shaft having one end rotatably journalled in a hollow end of the main drive shaft, the hollow end in turn being rotatably supported by a first bearing. The main shaft is additionally rotatably journalled in a second bearing spaced axially from the first bearing. Speed change gears rotatably are mounted on the main shaft between the bearings. The speed change gears when viewed from the first bearing towards the second bearing are arranged in a progressively descending order on progressively increased diameter portions of the main shaft.
