To study both the theoretical and experimental aspects of the dynamic behavior of submarine pipelines during the laying operation with an articulated stinger, Nippon Kokan developed a two-dimensional computer program to analyze the responses of the system. Experiments using a one-twentieth-scale model of 16-in.-dia. pipeline laid in 500 ft of water tracked wave-response tests in regular waves and forced oscillation tests in still water. The results established the relationships between the dynamic ending moments of the pipeline and (1) stinger motion, (2) water depth, (3) pipe diameter, and (4) stinger volume.
