Injecting air with steam almost doubled oil production from 3 cyclic steam stimulations in a California reservoir producing 11 API oil. Computer model studies reveal several mechanisms to explain the improved oil recovery. Trapped residual gas results in displaced oil, heated oil near the well bore is subject to gas drive, reservoir pressure and thus drawdown during backflow is higher, and more formation is heated to near steam temperature. Additional field tests and model studies are needed to better understand the process and guide future application.
