Analysis of metal in coal by ICAP

The metals content of coal ash is of considerable economic interest for managing power plant performance, environmental protection, and coal characterization research. The technique of inductively-coupled argon plasma (ICAP) atomic emission spectroscopy offers an improvement in metals analysis over atomic absorption (AA) and classical chemical methods. There are models of ICAP spectrometers that fit a wide variety of needs and budgets. As the use of ICAP in coal labs grows, it is certain that an ASTM standard for this improved technique will be approved.
