The metals content of coal ash is of considerable economic importance for managing power plant performance, for environmental protection and for coal characterisation research. The technique of inductively-coupled argon plasma (ICAP) atomic emission spectroscopy offers an improvement over atomic absorption and classical chemical methods. The use of the technique is described.
