Properties of halocarbons as working fluids in vapor compression refrigeration and air-conditioning machines are discussed. Certain halocarbons diffuse into the upper atmosphere and deplete the ozone layer, Impairment of the ozone shield is thought to increase the potential for skin cancer and to have significant effects on global climate and weather. Proposals have been made to restrict fluorocarbons at state and national levels. Legislation that may have impacts on the refrigeration and air-conditioning industries is discussed. (HLW)
