Concerns on the ozone-depleting potential of the chlorofluorcarbons have led to restrictive legislation and the development of alternative refrigerants. Thus far, these new refrigerants have been shown to decrease the efficiency of the vapor compression systems. This will merely exacerbate the electric supply problem and will probably result in increased demand charges. This paper reports that part of the solution to this problem is the use of primary energy sources for heating, cooling and refrigeration. Commercially available heat-activated sorption systems are limited to lithium bromide/water (LiBr-H{sub 2}O) and ammonia/water solution cycles. Lithium bromide systems are typically used in large commercial chillers while ammonia/water system are available for industrial refrigeration, residential air conditioning and specialty domestic refrigerators.
