Conversion from HF to H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ alkylation

STRATCO is aware of five current grass roots customers in Japan, Italy and Kuwait who made the decision to license H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ alkylation; part of their decision was based on the environmental risks of HF alkylation in high population densities around their refinery and future regulation of the chemical hazards of HF acid. STRATCO has also been approached by several refiners who are evaluating the risks associated with their existing HF units. Certainly there is a potential for legal liability to third parties in the event of an HF release. As a part of this risk evaluation, a natural question is: What is the feasibility of converting our alkylation unit from HF catalysts to H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/. STRATCO recently performed a series of process studies to evaluate the conversion of an HF alkylation unit to STRATCO's Effluent Refrigerated H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ alkylation technology. The results of this work indicate that such a conversion is economically feasible and would reduce environmental and human safety risks.
