Hazard and operability analysis (Hazop) has recently focused on hydrocarbon alkylation units. The Hazop technique is a structured process hazards analysis method that can be used to help identify these hazards and manage the risks. This analysis tool is gaining widespread acceptance as a key tool for process safety management in the hydrocarbon processing industry. Important results and observations have been derived from recent Hazop analyses performed on hydrofluoric acid (HF) and sulfuric acid (H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/) alkylation units at five refineries. Because of the inherent hazards associated with the use of HF or H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ as catalysts in the alkylation process, particular attention was focused on hazards involving potential releases of these toxic process materials. A few of the most important results that were found to be common among several of the units are presented.
