SiC whisker reinforced Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/-ZrO/sub 2/ composites

During machining, SiC whisker-reinforced alumina-zirconia ceramics used in superalloy-cutting tools fail in one or more of the following forms: cutting-edge wear, notching at the depth-of-cut line, chippage, or breakage. Attention is presently given to the combined effects on such tool ceramics of variations in the proportions of their alumina, zirconia, and SiC whisker constituents. SiC portions of 0-45 vol pct were tested in matrices of alumina with 0-30 vol pct zirconia. Fracture toughness was improved by both SiC and zirconia additions, although zirconia additions yielded lower hardness.
