Fabrication and properties of Si sub 3 N sub 4 composites reinforced by SiC whiskers and particles

Conference · · Ceramic Engineering and Science Proceedings; (USA)
OSTI ID:7144280
Effects of adding SiC in both the whisker and particulate forms as reinforcing materials to Si3N4 matrix ceramics on composite properties were investigated. The maximum fracture toughness of these composites was 10.5 MPa sq rt m, and flexural strength was 550 MPa for addition of 20 vol pct of SiC whiskers and 10 vol pct of SiC particles having an average particle size of 40 microns. Reinforcing mechanisms observed in these composites were crack deflection and crack branching by SiC particles and pullout of SiC whiskers. The effectiveness of utilizing two different reinforcing mechanisms together, that is, the mechanisms acting on the crack front (crack deflection, crack branching, and crack-pinning) and the mechanism of fiber pullout, for improving fracture toughness of composites was demonstrated. 5 refs.
