Peierls instability in the high-T/sub c/ superconductor La/sub 2-x/Ba/sub x/CuO/sub 4/

Based on the results of crystallographic and transport measurements, we propose that the high-T/sub c/ superconductor La/sub 1.85/Ba/sub 0.15/CuO/sub 4/ is close to a Peierls 2k/sub F/-instability. The role of this instability in the high-T/sub c/ superconducting mechanism is discussed. 12 refs., 1 fig.
