A recent symposium in Southern California examined the potential for increasing the use of methanol fuel in vehicles, electric utility plants, and industrial cogen power systems as a way of meeting mandated air quality standards for the late 1980's. The format of the symposium was based on presentations by experts from government, industry and research organizations plus inputs from a seven person panel comprising members of the boards of the sponsoring California organizations. The panel members aired their views in brief statements and posed questions to the various speakers in Q and A segments following sessions covering: the environmental impact of methanol use; government roles; supply and distribution; fuel methanol in autos; fuel methanol in heavy duty vehicles; and industrial and utility use of methanol fuel.
