City limits: emerging constraints on urban growth. [Monograph]

Book ·
OSTI ID:6478138
Modern cities show unique trends in the rapid growth of their population base, new resource and price constraints, and capital-intensive technology which are discontinuous with past urban-development patterns. These trends are explored in detail, with a focus on urban food supplies, energy constraints, and the location of employment. Migration has intensified in the past 30 years because modernization is slanted toward cities and people see that they will be better off there. The urban poor, however, eat less well even though their incomes are higher. Fossil fuels speeded the urbanization process by spurring industrialization and raising agricultural productivity, making the availability of jobs the major attractive force to the city. Urban planners and policymakers of developing countries need to break away from historical theories that migration effects will be self-correcting. Governments should develop management policies which encourage successful family planning and which balance the quality of life in both the rural and urban setting. 37 references, 4 tables. (DCK)
