The Hexall process is a more efficient and cost-effective method of making gasoline from propylene. There is promise that some older, existing poly units with tubular reactors can be revamped for this service. In the process, propylene is selectively dimerized at high conversion to a largely hexene mixture over a solid, fixed-bed catalyst without any chemicals or co-catalysts required. Hexene product from the process (Hexate) exhibits better blending octane and an improved volumetric yield on propylene charge than product from existing poly operation. The improved yield results from both the lower specific gravity of the Hexate and from improved propylene conversion. The Hexall process produces HD-5 grade propane or better as a byproduct stream from the unit.
