Increase gasoline yields with a new propylene dimerization process

Conference · · Natl. Pet. Refiners Assoc., (Tech. Pap.); (United States)

A solid catalyst has been discovered that is effective for the dimerization of propylene. The UOP Hexall /SUP sm/ process utilizes this new catalyst to provide a new and better way to economically and effectively convert propylene to gasoline. The catalyst operates at mild conditions without the need for any additives, co-catalyst or product treating beyond stabilization, and it achieves very high propylene conversions to a largely hexene product. The octane properties of this product have been examined by blending it in a variety of typical gasoline streams. Expected yields and product qualities, operating requirements and projected economics are presented and compared with the widely used Catalytic Condensation (Poly) process.
