By means of the /sup 18/O-labeled compounds it was established that the alkoxyallylolefin complexes of rhodium (Rh(eta/sup 2/-5,6-eta/sup 3/,2,3,8-C/sub 7/H/sub 7/-2-CH-OR)(eta/sup 5/-C/sub 5/H/sub 5/))/sup +/ An/sup -/ (R = Alk) formed in the O-alkylation of (2-formylnorbornadiene)cyclopentadienylrhodium with the simplest carbinols in acidic media are formed through the O-protonated form of the aldehyde, followed by nucleophilic attack by the carbinol at the electron-deficient ..cap alpha..-carbon center. In the course of the investigation the product from O-protonation of (2-formylnorbornadiene)cyclopentadienylrhodium, which is the key compound of the reaction, was isolated and characterized in the form of the PF/sub 6/ salt.
