The JT-60 upgrade is planned to enhance plasma performance of 6 MA divertor D{sub 2} plasma. The lower hybrid heating system will also be modified with the launcher to drive the plasma current and to control the plasma current profile efficiently. The new launcher composed of 16 multi-junction modules will be employed at a large horizontal port (0.9{times}0.79 m) to inject around 10 MW of RF power. Each module has a 12- or 18-waveguide divider in the toroidal direction. This new launcher features the controllability of N spectrum by changing the frequency over the range of 1.74 GHz to 2.23 GHz. The experiment with the new launcher will start in early 1991.
