The authors have found that heating RuCl/sub 3/ x 3H/sub 2/O with pentamethylcyclopentadiene and an arene in alcohols such as methanol, ethanol, and propanol at reflux leads to the formation of (Ru(C/sub 5/Me/sub 5/)(arene))/sup +/ cations isolated as the tetrafluoroborides and hexafluorophosphates in 60-70% yield. This reaction is a rare example of the concurrent coordination of cyclopentadienyl and arene ligands with a transition metal.
