Measurement of {ital R} at {radical} (s) =10.52thinspGeV and a study of hadronic transitions in {Upsilon}(2S){r_arrow}{Upsilon}(1S)
Using the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, R={sigma}(e{sup +}e{sup {minus}}{r_arrow}hadrons)/{sigma}(e{sup +}e{sup {minus}}{r_arrow}{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup {minus}}) was measured to be 3.56{plus_minus}0.01{plus_minus}0.07 at {radical} (s) =10.52thinspGeV. This implies values for the strong coupling constant of {alpha}{sub s}(10.52thinspGeV)=0.20{plus_minus}0.06, and {alpha}{sub s}(M{sub Z})=0.13{plus_minus}0.03. Using a sample of one-half million {Upsilon}(2S) events, the dipion transitions in {Upsilon}(2S){r_arrow}{Upsilon}(1S) were studied. Branching ratios, dipion invariant mass spectra, and various angular distributions were found to be consistent with current theoretical models. The decays {Upsilon}(2S){r_arrow}{Upsilon}(1S){eta} and {Upsilon}(2S){r_arrow}{Upsilon}(1S){pi}{sup 0} were not observed, and upper limits for their branching ratios these decays are given. {copyright} {ital 1998 American Institute of Physics.}
