{Upsilon} dipion transitions at energies near the {Upsilon}(4S)
Using a 4.19 fb{sup {minus}1} data sample collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have searched for dipion transitions between pairs of {Upsilon} resonances at center of mass energies E{sub c.m.}=10.58 GeV and E{sub c.m.}=10.52GeV. We obtain the 90{percent} confidence level upper limits B{bold (}{Upsilon}(4S){r_arrow}{Upsilon}(2S){pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}}{bold )}{lt}3.9{times}10{sup {minus}4} and B{bold (}{Upsilon}(4S){r_arrow}{Upsilon}(1S){pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}}{bold )}{lt}1.2{times}10{sup {minus}4}. We also observe the transitions {Upsilon}(3S){r_arrow}{Upsilon}(1S){pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}}, {Upsilon}(3S){r_arrow}{Upsilon}(2S){pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}}, and {Upsilon}(2S){r_arrow}{Upsilon}(1S){pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}}, from which we measure the cross sections for the radiative processes e{sup +}e{sup {minus}}{r_arrow}{Upsilon}(3S){gamma} and e{sup +}e{sup {minus}}{r_arrow}{Upsilon}(2S){gamma}. We obtain {sigma}{sub ee{r_arrow}{Upsilon}(3S){gamma}}=(17.8{plus_minus}3.0{plus_minus}1.7) pb and {sigma}{sub ee{r_arrow}{Upsilon}(2S){gamma}}=(15.5{plus_minus}1.3{plus_minus}1.4) pb at E{sub c.m.}=10.58 GeV, and {sigma}{sub ee{r_arrow}{Upsilon}(3S){gamma}}=(27.3{plus_minus}5.0{plus_minus}2.6) pb and {sigma}{sub ee{r_arrow}{Upsilon}(2S){gamma}}=(16.3{plus_minus}1.8{plus_minus}1.5) pb at E{sub c.m.}=10.52 GeV, which we compare with theoretical predictions. {copyright} {ital 1999} {ital The American Physical Society}
