Drilling activity in Oklahoma and the Penhandle of Texas continued to increase. It reached an unprecedented level in 1981, both in number of wells drilled and footage cut. This activity level far exceeds the previous historic peak of the mid-1950's. Exploratory tests increased 23% and development wells increased 25% from the activity recorded in 1980. Success rates declined slightly for exploratory tests (36.75%) and remained about the same for development wells (78.22%). Only 6 wells were drilled below 20,000 ft. Of the 12,274 wells drilled in the province, 27 successful exploratory wells are considered especially significant. Oil and gas production in the province increased slightly.
