Oil and gas developments in Oklahoma and the Panhandle of Texas in 1983

In 1983, the number of wells drilled in Oklahoma and the Panhandle of Texas decreased 16.2% from the record-breaking number in 1982. Exploratory tests decreased by 8.1%, and development wells decreased 16.8% from 1982 levels. Success rates for exploratory tests fell to 32.3%, and declined slightly for development wells to 73.9%. Deep drilling maintained a high level with 27 wells drilled below 20,000 ft. Of the 11,036 wells drilled in the province, 17 successful exploratory wells are considered especially significant. Whereas oil production in the province increased slightly during 1983, gas production continued to decline. 1 figure, 4 tables.
