This patent describes an X-ray source comprising: a housing forming a vacuum chamber the entirety of the housing being rotatable about an axis, a portion of the housing being an anode; means for rotating the housing about the axis; means, mounted within the chamber, for generating electrons and for focusing the electrons onto a region off the axis; rf transformer means for inductively coupling rf energy from a source external to the vacuum chamber through a wall portion of the housing to the means for generating electrons, the transformer means comprising a primary coil mounted outside of the vacuum chamber and a secondary coil mounted within the vacuum chamber, the secondary coil having an air core; and means for holding the means for generating and for focusing fixed when the housing is rotated about the axis so that the region remains fixed and the anode rotates through the region.
