Adjustable rotary vane pump
An adjustable rotary vane pump or motor device for changing the direction and rate of fluid flow therethrough is described comprising, in combination: a first pump housing having a first chamber therein extending along a central axis of the housing the first housing having an inlet and an outlet respectively opening into the chamber; a second pump housing mounted adjacent the first housing and having a second chamber therein extending along the axis and being generally coaxial with the first chamber; an insert member received within and slidably mounted in the second chamber for rotational movement about the axis, the insert member having an aperture therein and extending therethrough along the axis and wherein the cross section of the aperture is of a predetermined irregular shape; a rotor coaxially mounted in the housing and extending through the aperture and the first chamber; vanes mounted on the portion of the rotor extending through the first chamber and extending radially away from the axis for engaging the wall portions of the first chamber; and vanes mounted on the portion of the rotor which extends through the aperture for engaging the wall portions of the aperture.
