Rotary engine system

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6271199
A rotary machine is described, functional as a power unit or a fluid compression unit, comprising: a stator body having a cylindrical cavity there within; internal sidewall structure and end wall structure defining a closed chamber within the cavity; a rotor assembly rotatably mounted within the stator body, comprised of an elongate rotor body having a central, longitudinal axis of rotation along which extends, through the rotor body, a bore of circular cross section, and three vane members extending longitudinally along the rotor body at equiangularly spaced locations there about, and mounted to extend beyond the outer surface of the rotor body, between the chamber defining end wall structures, and for slidable movement radially with respect to the longitudinal axis of the rotor body, and having outer end portions that engage the internal sidewall structure to divide the chamber into three compartments, each compartment having a volume that varies cyclically as the rotor assembly rotates within the stator body; and an elongate distributor core member of generally circular cross section received within the bore of the rotor body and supported, the rotor body having at least one duct extending through each of the sectors thereof and providing fluid flow communication between the rotor body bore and the chamber, each of the ducts having an inner end opening on a surface defining the bore and an outer end opening on the rotor body outer surface, the core member defining two discrete passages and including an outer, generally cylindrical surface portion in contact with the inner surface of the rotor body and effectively closing the inner ends of the ducts when in registry therewith, the outer wall surface portion being discontinuous, and the core member having internal structure defining the passages and isolating them from one another, and establishing communication between the orifice and both of the passages, independently.
