IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO NEUTRON SHIELDING STRUCTURES

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4129745
BS>A neutron shielding structure for a duct by which coolant is conducted to or from a nuclear reactor core region comprises at least three separate neutron-absorbing members spaced from one another along the interior of a portion of the duct extending away from the core region so as to define paths for coolant flow. The first and second of the members are of annular form disposed coaxially in the bore of the duct with the first member having an outer periphery extending to the duct wall and the second member having an outer periphery of greater span than the inner periphery of the first member. The third member comprises an elongate body disposed lengthwise along the axis of the duct, the periphery of the body having a span greater than the inner periphery of the second member. The duct may be disposed coaxially within a further duct, and in the interspace between the ducts may be disposed further neutron-absorbing members spaced to define paths for coolant flow. The further members are also disposed so that one overlaps another to impede neutrons streaming along the interspace. The innei of the two ducts may be withdrawable from the outer. (A.G.W.)
