We have measured the x[sub F] and P[sub T] dependence of the polarization of [Lambda][sup 0] hyperons produced in exclusive final states pp[r arrow]p[Lambda][sup 0]K[sup +][pi][sup +] [pi][sup [minus]] , pp[r arrow]p[Lambda][sup 0]K[sup +][pi][sup +] [pi][sup [minus]][pi][sup +][pi][sup [minus]] , pp[r arrow]p[Lambda][sup 0]K[sup + ][pi][sup +][pi][sup [minus]][pi][sup +] [pi][sup [minus]][pi][sup +][pi][sup [minus]] , and pp[r arrow]p[Lambda][sup 0]K[sup +][pi][sup +] [pi][sup [minus]][pi][sup +][pi][sup [minus]][pi][sup +][pi][sup [minus]][pi][sup +][pi][sup [minus] ] at 27.5thinspthinspGeV/c . We present an empirical parametrization for [Lambda][sup 0] polarization as a function of x[sub F] and P[sub T] : P=([minus]0.443[plus minus]0.03 7)x[sub F]P[sub T] for [minus]1[le]x[sub F][le]1 and 0[le]P[sub T][le]1.8 GeV/ c . This parametrization is independent of the final state and provides a good description of the data. We note that the mechanism responsible for [Lambda][sup 0] polarization appears to be independent of the production mechanism. [copyright] [ital 1999] [ital The American Physical Society]
