Study of {Lambda}{sup 0} Polarization in Four Different Exclusive pp Reactions at 27.5 GeV/c

We have measured the x{sub F} and P{sub T} dependence of the polarization of {Lambda}{sup 0} hyperons produced in exclusive final states pp{r_arrow}p{Lambda}{sup 0}K{sup +}{pi}{sup +} {pi}{sup {minus}} , pp{r_arrow}p{Lambda}{sup 0}K{sup +}{pi}{sup +} {pi}{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}} , pp{r_arrow}p{Lambda}{sup 0}K{sup + }{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup +} {pi}{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}} , and pp{r_arrow}p{Lambda}{sup 0}K{sup +}{pi}{sup +} {pi}{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus} } at 27.5thinspthinspGeV/c . We present an empirical parametrization for {Lambda}{sup 0} polarization as a function of x{sub F} and P{sub T} : P=({minus}0.443{plus_minus}0.03 7)x{sub F}P{sub T} for {minus}1{le}x{sub F}{le}1 and 0{le}P{sub T}{le}1.8 GeV/ c . This parametrization is independent of the final state and provides a good description of the data. We note that the mechanism responsible for {Lambda}{sup 0} polarization appears to be independent of the production mechanism. {copyright} {ital 1999} {ital The American Physical Society}
