This study provides an analytical framework, the 1974 Kentucky Coal Counties input-output model, with which to assess the impacts of the coal industry on the economy of the eighteen coal counties. These impacts include the output, income, and employment multiplier effects, and also the sectoral and occupational income distribution of the area. The study also projects the guture output, employment and distribution of wages and salaries under alternative assumptions of the growth of industries in the region. Finally, the projections are studied for possible policy recommendations regarding employment and income distribution in the region. The study concludes that the coal industry cannot serve as a long-run source of economic growth for the region. Therefore, it is suggested that if the goals of the regional decision makers are to promote economic growth and increase the level of income and employment in the area, then the Coal Counties economy needs to be diversified.
