Distributional model: economic activity and the quality of life in eastern Kentucky

Journal Article · · Growth Change; (United States)
The Appalachian region of Kentucky is a good place in which to examine how the distribution of economic benefits influences the economic development process. Using quality of life as an indicator of the outcome of the development process, the authors show that manufacturing is associated with more widely distributed employment and income than coal production even though residents in manufacturing counties make lower average wages per employee and have lower per capita incomes than residents of counties with coal production. This suggests that differences in the distribution of income and employment associated with manufacturing and coal production are the key to the developmental potential of these economic activities. 1 figure, 3 tables.
