Upgrade coke by gasification

Gasification of petroleum coke offers another way to dispose of coke made from upgrading the ''bottom of the barrel.'' This option takes on greater significance with the realization that coke production could increase from 7 mmtpy in 1980 to as much as 14 mmtpy by 1990. Such coke usually sells at a discount to coal because of its high sulfur and low volatile matter content. Up to now this approach has been limited for lack of a good process for gasification. Now a process for catalytic conversion of petroleum coke under development by Tosco. The Tosco process has been demonstrated to be able to offer a good opportunity for upgrading coke into useful products such as fuel gas, refinery hydrogen, methanol or other petrochemicals. Extensive pilot scale work has proved the effectiveness of the low temperature, catalytic process for converting petroleum coke into a medium Btu (250300 Btu/scf) synthesis gas.
