In ultrasonics, it is often desired to deconvolve a waveform to recover the ``impulse`` that was used to generate the response. The impulse is the spike or square wave pulse used to excite the transducer. When the impulse is convolved with the transducer and material transfer function, it results in a ringing response. This response tends to limit the time resolution of separate events such as thin layers of oxide adhering to a tube wall or coatings of epoxy on a metal surface. A deconvolution filter has been developed using an adaptive time-domain solution to a Wiener filter. This approach has several advantages over frequency-domain techniques. The filter has been implemented on the AMDATA IntraSpect/PC and used in the field to measure oxide film as thin as 8 mils in operating fossil power plants and to measure epoxy coatings as thin as 4 mils in vessels and piping. The system has shown excellent measurement accuracy of thin layers.
