In appraising the potential commercial viability of the product of a synfuels project, investors and sponsors should look to the Energy Security Act as a major guide in assessing the extent and nature of the support that can be expected from the federal government. This article examines several statutes and regulatory activities, along with the Act, from the perspective of the economics of marketing synthetic fuels. It concludes that government participation is likely to change, especially in the case of incentives to commercial development through the Synthetic Fuels Corporation, despite the underlying premise that market forces alone will not ensure the timely development of synthetic fuels. 153 references.
