Radioscopy has often been perceived as a test method offering less sensitivity than film radiography. Thanks to smaller X-ray focal spots, improved detectors and digital image processing the opposite is often true. Storing an archival quality inspection image over a period of years was also perceived as a serious limitation. The advent of the digital optical disk has essentially removed this limitation. ASTM has long been known for its role in the development of radiographic standards. ASTM E-94, E-142, E-747 and E-1025 are some of the more well-known ASTM standard on film radiography and the use of image quality indicators. ASTM`s activities in radioscopic standards began in 1984 when ASTM issued E-1000 entitled Standard Guide for Radiologic Real-Time Imaging. While this document was tutorial in nature and did not define the use of radioscopy, it paved the way. In 1988 ASTM issued E-1255 Standard Practice for Radioscopy that standardized the radioscopic test method in a generalized way and allowed the use of radioscopy as a bona-fide non-destructive examination method. ASTM also issues standard method documents that are more proceduralized than the more general standard practices. One that applies to the radioscopy of weldments is E-1416 ``Standard Method for the Radioscopic Examination of Weldments.`` A standard methods for the radioscopy of castings is in process. In 1989 ASME included radioscopy as a recognized test method in Section 5. Another important area ASTM has addressed is the storage of analog and digital recording media to assure an archival quality inspection record. The document entitled Storage of Media that Contains Analog or Digital Radioscopic Data has recently been issued as E-1453. The standardization of digital data fields for radioscopic inspection information has also been addressed. Radioscopy has finally reached the goal of becoming a recognized stand-along nondestructive test method.
