X-radiology image quality indicators and measurements

This tutorial presentation emphasizes current and in-process ASTM standards for X-radiology image quality indicators (IQI`s) and related measurements. The presentation mainly involves X-radiographic examination; radioscopy and tomography topics are to be presented in companion papers in this session. Widely used standards for plaque-hole and wire type IQI`s (sometimes called penetrameters) are reviewed along with the general radiography standards, Standard Guide for Radiographic Testing (ASTM E94-92) and the Standard Method for Controlling Quality of Radiographic Testing (ASTM E142-92). Another important document for X-radiography is the Standard Method for Determining Relative Image Quality Response of Industrial Radiographic Film (ASTM E746-87/92). This document describes a multi-hole IQI that permits a statistical analysis of film response and, for some applications, a finer determination of contrast sensitivity. The procedure described is for an X-ray energy of 200 kV. New procedures for lower and higher energy analyses are under discussion.
