Getting individual customers involved in energy conservation: a printed comparative energy use indicator on customer bills

Atlantic City Electric Company is implementing an award-winning conservation idea for increasing public awareness that other utilities might want to consider. The company has converted two-thirds of its generating facilities from oil to coal, provided speakers on energy conservation, sent pamphlets to customers suggesting ways to save electricity and use appliances more efficiently, and supported a state bill calling for a ban on inefficient air conditioners. Its most significant and innovative project has been a statement provided on each residential monthly bill that tells how much more or less electricity was used in the current month in comparison with the same month last year. This allows the consumer to monitor this progress toward meeting conservation goals.
