Condensation of pions in the electric field of a supercharged nucleus

Under the assumption that there exist supercharged nuclei with Zapprox.A/2> or approx. =1/e/sup 3/ and n< or approx. =n/sub 0/, where n/sub 0/ is the normal nuclear density, the self-consistent problem of the spatial distribution of the ..pi../sup -/-meson field and electric field is solved. The conditions under which the ..pi../sup -/-condensate has the characteristic wave-vector kapprox. =0 and knot =0 are found. For Z>>1/e/sup 3/ the nucleus is an electrically neutral plasma of n, p, ..pi../sup -/, and e/sup -/, with 7--8 times as many ..pi../sup -/ as electrons. The energy of the nucleus in this case is lower than in the case of purely electronic screening )B. Mueller and J. Rafelski, Phys. Rev. Lett. 34, 349 (1975); A. B. Migdal, D. N. Voskresenskii, and V. S. Popov, Pis'ma. Zh. Eksp. Teor Fiz. 24, 186 (1976) (JETP Lett. 24, 163 (1976)) and Zh. Eksp. Teor. Fiz. 72, 834 (1977) (Sov. Phys. JETP 45, 436 (1977))). It is shown that ..pi..-condensation in the purely electric field of the nucleus, without allowance for the nuclear interaction of the ..pi.. mesons with the nucleons, and also with allowance for this interaction in the case when the condensate wave-vector kapprox. =O, is insufficient to make the system stable.
